Welcome to sydneybeaches.net

This site is the definitive guide to ALL ocean and harbour beaches in SydneyRemarkably there are over 150 beaches in the Sydney metropolitan area. On this site I have attempted to document them all. If you want to see all of the beaches listed alphabetically and plotted on a map then you can by CLICKING HERE (index.php?option=com_wrapper Itemid=55). All the maps on the site can be zoomed and panned as well as switched between street map and sattelite views. The menu on the left hand side lets you browse the beaches by harbour and ocean categories and also view more detailed maps by area of Sydney. By clicking on a beach in the lists you will get a description of the beach, some photographs and a detailed map of where to find it. On the site you will also find a links to a short video tour of some of the beaches and an amazing Google Earth flight over the harbour beaches. If you are interested in discussing any aspects of Sydney’s beaches then please post your comments on the Discussion Board.

Become a Beach Bagger

I am attempting to visit all of the beaches in Sydney and have so far visited over 100 of them. This is a fascinating and entertaining way of exploring the city. Why not join me in attempting this feat. Many residents and visitors of Scotland attempt to visit all the Mountains in that country. The Scottish call the mountains “Munros” and the people who attempt to visit them all “Munro Baggers”. I have coined the phrase “Beach Bagger” for people trying to visit all of Sydney’s beaches. If you want to become a Beach Bagger then you can download a document to record your visits and buy Beach Bagger merchandise in the online shop.Click on the menu link and check it out. We will be adding new items on a regular basis.

Beaches Listed

I originally read that there were over 70 beaches in Sydney. So far this site has 155 listed. Many thanks to Professor Andrew Short for starting me off with data from his excellent book (http://fmx01.ucc.usyd.edu.au/jspcart/jsp/cart/Product.jsp?nID=28&nCategoryID=SR&searchTitle=&searchAuthor=andrew%20short&searchCategory=null&searchISBN=) and details of his search (http://www.smh.com.au/news/science/once-were-beaches-/2005/12/23/1135032186917.html) of the Sydney Harbour Beaches.Andrew’s original definition of a Beach is that it must have over 50m of sand exposed at high tide. As my scope expanded into various estuary beaches I have decided to only accept beaches that are recognized as such through having a name that is documented on an official map.I am sure my list of beaches is not yet perfect so please let me know of any errors and omissions
